The GEN-01 generator was designed to clock stepper motor drivers. which makes it possible to control the stepper motor without having to connect it to a computer. or other advanced controller. Thanks to the generator, we can smoothly regulate the engine speed. The pulse frequency range is 0 - 150kHz (+/-5%). The system generates a +5V symmetrical square wave (CMOS). and thanks to the built-in divider, we can precisely set the selected frequency. The motor speed is regulated by a potentiometer. which is connected to a voltage input in the range of 0..5V. The use of the device is not limited only to clocking stepper motor drivers. It can also be used to control other devices.
The GEN-01 board has space for an additional soldered potentiometer instead of the axial potentiometer. This comes in handy in situations. when we do not need speed regulation, we just want a fixed value. By adding a capacitor, e.g. 220uF/10V, we obtain a kind of speed "ramp", which is useful when "spinning up" engines to higher speeds. Please remember. that the motor should be accelerated and braked smoothly - this is especially important for stepper motors. There is a jumper on the generator board to set the frequency division. ARK 1.5 mm² connectors with a maximum voltage of 250V and a forward current of 16A were used to make connections to external devices. Components. from which the GEN-01 generator module was made meet the European Union's RoHS directive (Restriction of use of certain Hazardous Substances) regarding environmental protection. The device is made using lead-free technology. The binder used to assemble the device contains 99% tin and 1% copper.
Please visit our advice section. where we presented the capabilities of our Gen-01 generator in more detail. The article can be found at this address. During a several-minute video, we present how to connect the generator to the stepper motor controller and explain the possibilities offered by the speed ramp.

The jumper placed on the generator board is used to set the frequency division. with which we can select one of 5 operating modes (five different maximum frequencies). Do not change the jumper position while the device is operating. because it may cause unstable engine operation - this is caused by this. that the signal from the generator flows through this element and removing it will interrupt the generation of pulses.
LED D1The lit LED indicates the presence of generator supply voltage.
Operation of the GEN-01 generator Connecting the moduleThe generator is designed for continuous operation. It is started by applying the supply voltage. Automatically after this operation. at the system output. a square wave signal is generated. The frequency depends on the setting of the control potentiometer. or more precisely, from the potential applied to input B of connector P1. The range of voltage changes must be in the range 0 – 5V.
The GEN-01 board has space for an additional soldered potentiometer instead of the axial potentiometer. This comes in handy in situations. when we do not need speed regulation, we just want a fixed value. By adding a 10...220uF/10V capacitor to the system, we will obtain a system with the so-called ramp. The engine speed will increase and decrease linearly. This operation may be useful when "spinning up" engines to higher speeds. The method of installing the external potentiometer and the above-mentioned capacitor is shown in the diagram below.
Pay attention to the correct polarization of the capacitor. Reverse connection may damage it.
Connecting the generator to the most popular stepper motor controllers offered by our company.
Calculation of engine speed based on the generator frequency
Having a motor with a given number of steps and the measured frequency of the generated pulses (e.g. using a frequency counter or oscilloscope), the number of motor revolutions per second is calculated as follows:
NUMBER OF MICRO STEPS = NUMBER OF ENGINE STEPS X DIVISION
where "DIVISION" is the microstep set on the controller.
RPM NUMBER = GENERAL FREQUENCY. / NUMBER OF MICROSTEP
NUMBER OF RPM = 60 X NUMBER OF RPM
Example:
Number of motor steps = 200.
Generator frequency = 1000 Hz.
Division = 1/8
NUMBER OF MICROSTEP = 200 X 8 = 1600
NUMBER OF RPMS = 1000 / 1600 = 0.625 RPMs
NUMBER OF RPM = 60 X 0.625 = 37.5 rpm
In case the GEN-01 module does not work properly. the first step should be to check whether the problem is electrical or mechanical (lack of connections). It is important to. to document every step in solving the problem. You may need to use this documentation at a later date. and the details contained therein will greatly help our Technical Support employees solve the problem.
